VAC's Five-Year Strategic Plans

2001-2006 Strategic Plan

The strategic objectives and priorities which are outlined in this plan will set a course for VAC that will confirm the Department's relevancy, enhance the integrity of its programs and make for a vibrant, challenging workplace.

Veterans Affairs' Sustainable Development Strategy

At Veterans Affairs (VA) we remain firmly committed to the principles and practices of sustainable development as we continue to integrate its key tenets into our day-to-day business.

VAC's Service Improvement Initiatives

The Service Improvement Initiative is a key component of the Government of Canada's ongoing commitment to provide Citizen-Centred Service Delivery to all Canadians. The essence of this initiative is to achieve significant, measurable and sustainable improvement in the level of Canadains' satisfaction with the quality of service provided by various federal government departments and agencies. As part of VAC's Service Improvement Initiative, national client satisfaction surveys were conducted in 2001, 2003 and 2005, a Departmental Service Improvement Plan was developed, and Service Standards were revised.

Government Response to the Report of the Standing Committee on National Defense and Veterans Affairs (SCONDVA)

In June 2003, SCONDVA issued a report entitled Honouring the Pledge: Ensuring Long Term Care for Veterans in response to a study regarding long-term care for Veterans throughout Canada. This report contains SCONDVA's 25 recommendations and the Government's response for enhancing Veterans' care in long-term care facilities. The report focuses on three main themes: food services, type of accommodation (private versus shared rooms) and management of waiting lists.

Human Resources Five Year Strategic Plans

VAC will not be able to realise its corporate objectives and related strategic priorities without a credible Strategic Human Resources Plan that addresses important issues such as staff retention and recruitment, learning and development opportunities, the need for greater diversity in the workplace, assistance for employees through the transition, employee counselling, and effective ways of managing stress and balancing workloads.

Environmental Management System Manuals

An Environmental Management System (EMS) is a management tool that provides a framework which enables an organisation to manage its environmental goals and to document, communicate and evaluate its environmental performance. An EMS provides a means of identifying, reducing, and managing environmental risks. At the very least, it helps to ensure that an organization's operations are consistent with environmental protection legislation.

Management Capacity Checks

Veterans Affairs Canada (VAC) and 13 other lead departments are embracing a major Government-wide change initiative, a fundamental shift in managerial focus toward the principles and practices of "Modern Comptrollership". Simply stated, Modern Comptrollership is a shift from a primarily financial focus to a broader perspective involving the sound management of all resources through informed, effective decision-making. This new focus is to be achieved by shifting the managerial emphasis from controls and compliance to results and values.
