Minister Honours Great War Veteran
Mr. Paul Métivier, one of the last surviving veterans of the "war to end all wars", is the first recipient of the Minister of Veterans Affairs Commendation. In presenting the award, the Honourable Dr. Rey Pagtakhan, Minister of Veterans Affairs, paid tribute to Mr. Métivier's ongoing service to his country that began in 1917, at the tender age of 16, when he lied about his age and enlisted in the First World War.
"He is an ambassador for veterans and a truly great Canadian," said Minister Pagtakhan, noting Mr. Métivier's tireless efforts over the years to commemorate the sacrifices made by his fellow veterans. Now almost 102 years of age, Mr. Métivier's experiences and observations about war have been documented on film and television. He has participated in many overseas pilgrimages and commemorative events and spoken to hundreds of students and visitors at the Canadian War Museum.
The Minister's Commendation was established in 2002 and is only given to individuals who have performed exemplary service to the veteran community or who represent commendable role models for their fellow veterans.
