Fleming, Sir Sandford
Sir Sandford Fleming was Canada's foremost railway surveyor and construction engineer of the 19th century. On 8 February 1879, he proposed to divide the world into 24 equal time zones, with a standard time within each zone. His idea was adopted by 24 countries at a conference in 1884.
