November 10, 1998 Message from the Prime Minister -- The following e-mail message sent by the Prime Minister of Canada was received today by the 80th Anniversary Pilgrimage. more ... A week to honour and remember the achievements and sacrifice of Canada's veterans. November 5-11 is Veterans' Week in Canada. This year, there is a special focus on the First World War as we mark the 80th anniversary of its end.
As part of its mandate to keep alive the memory of the achievements and sacrifices of the men and women who served during Canada's wartime history, Veterans Affairs Canada is conducting a pilgrimage to France marking the 80th anniversary of the end of the First World War. The day before John McCrae wrote his famous poem "In Flanders Fields", one of his closest friends was killed in the fighting and buried in a makeshift grave with a simple wooden cross. Wild poppies were already beginning to bloom between the crosses marking the many graves. Unable to help his friend or any of the others who had died, John McCrae gave them a voice through his poem.
