Vimy Repairs to Begin
An international team of restoration experts is expected to begin work in December to
repair and restore the Canadian National Vimy Memorial in France. The monument,
which honours the sacrifices and achievements of Canadians during the First
World War, has suffered a lot of weather related damage since its completion in 1936.
The work will involve repairing stone, walkways, walls, terraces, stairs and platforms.
The Vimy Memorial project is part of a $30 million Government of Canada commitment, led by Veterans Affairs Canada, to repair and restore 13 First World War battlefield memorials in Europe. You can learn more about the Vimy Memorial and the historic Battle of Vimy Ridge by visiting our Web site at www.vac-acc.gc.ca - go to Canada Remembers and click on Memorials.
Every year, Veterans Affairs Canada encourages college and university students to apply for the opportunity to work as guides in France at the Canadian National Vimy Memorial and the Beaumont-Hamel Newfoundland Memorial. If you know a young person who may want to learn more about this opportunity, please tell them to visit the Youth section of our Web site at www.vac-acc.gc.ca or e-mail us at cvwm@vac-acc.gc.ca |
