Veterans Affairs Canada: Proudly Serving Canada's Veteran Community

Vol.1, No.1
Issue #1, Autumn 2001

AN OUNCE OF FALLS PREVENTION

Accidents due to falls can happen to anyone. But as we age, our risk of falling becomes greater. In fact, one in three older Canadians fall each year. Many of these falls happen in the home. And many are preventable. To help address this serious concern, Veterans Affairs Canada and Health Canada are partnering in a four-year pilot project to develop practical falls prevention strategies for veterans and other seniors. Six provinces are involved: British Columbia, Ontario and the four Atlantic provinces. To date, more than 15 community-based projects have been approved for funding. As part of this project, VAC also has developed an information guide to provide you with some simple, practical tips about what you can do to stay safe and on your feet. Please contact your local District Office to obtain a free copy. You can also read more about our Falls Prevention pilot project by visiting our Web site.
