PTSD: The Benefits of Case Conferencing

In our first issue of Salute!, we told you about a booklet published by Veterans Affairs Canada that helps people who have Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), a condition that may be caused after experiencing a traumatic event. Another VAC initiative which is proving quite helpful is case conferencing.

Case conferencing is used by VAC staff to develop care plans for clients who have unusual or complex needs. This may include cases that involve clients who suffer from PTSD or other occupational stress disorders. While many matters can be addressed at the District Office level, other cases occasionally require the skills and expertise of staff at several levels of the organization. To protect the privacy of the client, all discussions are kept confidential. We've found that this kind of collective brainstorming and combined expertise often leads to creative problem-solving. It also gives staff the opportunity to focus on all of the client's needs. This holistic approach offers tremendous value to the client, especially if their needs cannot be addressed through a single provider.
