You CAN Prevent Falls!

Snow, ice and slush are common to Canadian winters. But these slippery conditions can put many people, especially veterans and other seniors, at greater risk of falling.

To help you stay on your feet and healthy, it is recommended that you:
  • keep your exterior steps and walkways in good repair and free of snow, ice and leaves;
  • keep all entrances well lit;
  • install handrails where necessary;
  • wear footwear that is comfortable, with good support, low heels and non-slip soles; and
  • ensure that your walking cane is the correct height and rubber-tipped for safety.

For more common sense tips on how to prevent falls, call 1-866-552-2122 and ask for a free copy of our Falls Prevention brochure. This brochure has been developed as part of a four-year Falls Prevention Initiative now under way between VAC and Health Canada. Information on falls prevention also is on the VAC Web site: look under Clients, then Health Promotion.
