A Wise Ol' Owl Once told Me...
Fraud is a serious crime that costs billions of dollars and affects thousands of Canadians every year. Gordon Wright of Edmonton, Alberta, knows all about it. He is a veteran and a volunteer member of the Wise Owls organization, which is made up of senior citizens interested in reducing the number of fraud-related crimes against seniors.
If you do become a victim of fraud, says Gordon, you should report the crime immediately to fraud prevention authorities. Don't be ashamed or embarrassed to share your experience. It could help others. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) has made available on-line a Seniors' Guidebook to Safety and Security. The guidebook is available on the RCMP's Web site at: www.rcmp-ccaps.com/seniors.htm.
Good advice from the RCMP
- Do not keep large amounts of money in your home.
- Be extremely cautious of the home repairman who is just passing by.
- Avoid giving out personal and credit card information over the telephone.
- Be wary of advertisements that promote miracle cures. Check out these claims with your doctor before you send any money.
