In many cases, people who maintain their health are able to stay independent longer. The best gift you can give yourself is to take control of your health. Nearly one out of two adult Canadians is now considered to be overweight. That puts them at greater risk of developing health problems, such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, heart disease and stroke. But when it comes to losing weight, you can tip the scales in your favour:
- Talk to your doctor. Learn the best weight for you and ask for a food plan and an exercise plan that will help you reach that weight.
- Keep a food diary. Take time to write down everything you eat and drink during the day. It may help you to spot bad habits. For example, many people find they eat more when they go out to a restaurant or eat their meal in front of the television.
- Limit portions of food. For example, a single portion of meat is about the size of a deck of cards. This may look small if you put it on a regular-size dinner plate but if you switch to a dessert plate, your plate will look full!
- Exercise regularly, under the supervision of your doctor. Walking is a good, cheap way to get fit: 30 minutes a day, several days a week, is often recommended. Start slowly and don't overdo it if you have not exercised in a while. If walking alone bothers you, find a "walking buddy," like a friend, a grandchild, or a dog! In addition, many people with arthritis or stiff joints find that gentle movement, like stretching exercises or swimming, can help keep muscles and joints healthy.
