The World Remembers
On June 6, 2004, veterans from all over the world returned to the beaches of Normandy, France to commemorate the 60th anniversary of D-Day and the Battle of Normandy. In the weeks leading up to June 6, Veterans Affairs Canada took part in many events in Canada and overseas to pay tribute to Canadian veterans who served during this historic military event: ![Veterans Affairs Canada's official D-Day and Battle of Normandy Poster.](/web/20060306234926im_/http://www.vac-acc.gc.ca/content/salute/july2004/images/poster2004.jpg) Veterans Affairs Canada's official D-Day and Battle of Normandy Poster.
- 60 veterans and 13 young people joined our Department overseas in a Return to Normandy event. During this special trip, veterans had the opportunity to return to past battle
grounds, show respect for lost comrades, and share their memories with people of all ages. They were joined by dignitaries from around the world, including Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.
- Here in Canada, thousands of people, young and old, attended more than 50 local events held on June 6 in every province and territory. In Ottawa, thousands also attended a national service of remembrance at the National War Memorial.
- More than 60 Nova Scotia D-Day veterans were honoured at Pier 21 in Halifax when the Royal Canadian Mint launched a 2004 sterling silver coin to mark the 60th anniversary. A
commemorative stamp also has been issued.
- 1,000 veterans visited 1,000 schools across Canada to speak with students about D-Day and
the Battle of Normandy. Veterans Affairs Canada partnered with the Dominion Institute's
Memory Project to help make this happen.
