Storytime

June is Seniors Month, a time to celebrate seniors and their contributions to our society. Almost 23% of Canadian seniors contribute time each week as unpaid volunteers. Mae Ames from Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, is one of these very special volunteers. For years, Mae has read stories to neighbourhood children. Now, as a volunteer in a new program that has been launched by the P.E.I. Literacy Alliance, Mae has been attending workshops across the Island, passing along her story-telling tradition to children of all ages.Mae is a war bride who came to Canada from England in 1946. Throughout her life she has volunteered with Laubach Literacy of Canada to teach adults how to read. "I think it is everybody's God-given right to read," says Mae.

Over the years, many adults and children have benefited from Mae's kind spirit and nurturing stories. She is just one of many seniors we will celebrate during Seniors Month this year. Mae, thank you for making our world a better place to live.
We Salute! you.
