Overseas Service Veterans

Recent changes to our regulations now make it possible for us to offer home care and health care benefits to qualified war service veterans who:

  • served overseas;
  • qualify for priority access to a long-term care facility owned, or under contract with, Veterans Affairs Canada; and
  • remain at home because they are on a wait list to get into the facility.

Your ability to qualify for these benefits will also depend on whether the benefits are available to you through a provincial program. Please call us at 1-866-522-2122 if you think you qualify for these benefits, or you need more information about the program.

Did You Know?

In 1999, our Department put in place a pilot project to provide more at-home services to aging war service veterans who had served overseas, were in need of long-term care, and on a wait list to be admitted to a facility. The pilot was so successful that we decided to expand it across the country. The change in the regulations means this is now possible. We'd like to thank the many veterans who participated in the pilot for their thoughtful comments and support.

You Said It...

Oversears Service VeteransHere are some quotes from veterans and their families who participated in theOverseas Service Veterans pilot program:

"Without this program, I could not live with my family. It is very important to have family with me. Especially my wife." - Veteran.

"I live alone with no caregiver and am legally blind. Assistance with housekeeping is essential for me to stay in my home."  - Veteran.

"My husband has Parkinson's Disease. Should his condition change, I may feel differently about placement, but not now. He really enjoys being (at home) and I certainly enjoy having him here." - Spouse and caregiver.
