Stop #4 - Water Tank Chamber

002
LOW RES. 024 HIGH RES.

The room at the top of these stairs was a Water Supply Point. Good drinking water was hard to find near the front and hard to transport.

At the far end of the room is an opening to another short section of tunnel. On the right, an opening which is now blocked leads to the surface. It was both a ventilation shaft for the gasoline engine which drove the water pump and a ramp from which ammunition and hand grenades could be hauled up to the front line from a magazine which was located in the small room on the right as you face away from the air shaft.

Sapper Tunnel

LOW RES. 024 HIGH RES.

The stairs lead down to tunnels or saps which were dug under enemy lines to install the mines which caused enormous craters along the front. Here you can see the remains of the pipes which were used to pump water.
