Veterans Affairs Canada: Proudly Serving Canada's Veteran Community
  December 2004

Welcome!

Salute! is pleased to introduce you to the Honourable Albina Guarnieri, your new Minister of Veterans Affairs. Ms. Guarnieri was appointed by the Prime Minister of Canada on July 20, 2004. She has been a Member of Parliament for Mississauga East-Cooksville since 1988.

Minister Talking

Since joining our Department, Minister Guarnieri has made it a priority to move forward with many initiatives that will build on our work to care for the needs of war service veterans, veterans of the Canadian Forces, the RCMP, and their families.

"Our mission mirrors what society as a whole is facing: dealing with a record number of retired people who need specialized services, while another generation seeks continuous retraining for new careers and changing industries," says Minister Guarnieri.

Recently, Minister Guarnieri also led a Government of Canada delegation to Italy to commemorate veterans who fought during the Second World War in the Italian Campaign.

"We cannot properly serve any of our war service veterans or those who wear the maple leaf in peacekeeping activities at home and around the world without expressing the nation's pride in their accomplishments. Canadians have reason to be proud of their achievements and reason to be humbled by the scale of their sacrifice," notes Minister Guarnieri.
