Caregiver Burnout: Take the Test
Are you a family caregiver? If so, please take a moment to think about the following statements:
I frequently...
feel tired, angry, distracted, impatient with others, or cry easily.
have trouble sleeping.
get sick.
have back pain, headaches, feelings of depression.
feel I don't have time for myself or my hobbies.
have trouble finding time to visit with friends or family.
feel everything is important and must be done immediately.
worry about not having enough money to make ends meet.
feel I don't have enough knowledge or experience to give proper care.
Depending on the number of statements you gave a "yes" to, you may be experiencing caregiver burnout. This is a serious problem but there are many people within your community who may be able to help you. As a first step, please consider reaching out to family and friends, your family doctor, or local organizations that provide services such as housekeeping, meal delivery, nursing and respite care, or transportation. To locate any of these services, try the yellow pages of your phone directory under Social and Human Service Organizations. Veterans and their families who need help locating these services also can contact their local VAC District Office or the VAC Assistance Service program at 1-800-268-7708.
