Features of the Canadian passport

Identification page of the passport booklet

Passport Canada is committed to providing Canadians with documents and services that are internationally respected.

The Canadian passport has enhanced security features making it extremely difficult to alter or forge. This reflects our commitment to meet the highest security standard in the world.

The cover of the booklet bears an updated version of the familiar gold Canada Coat of Arms. The personal information page that identifies the bearer includes:

1) Digital photo
Your photo is digitally-printed and embedded into the page.
4) "Ghost" photo
A reproduction of your photo will appear only under ultraviolet light.
2) Holograms
The new passport includes a series of holographic images called a "crystagram". These are embossed on the secure information page. When the booklet is tilted, they appear to move across the page.
5) Digitally-printed information
Your personal data as well as your signature will be digitally-printed and embedded in the page. This cannot be removed or erased.
3) Special ink
New "optically variable ink" that changes colour under different lighting.
6) Machine-readable zone
The last two lines at the bottom of the page form the machine-readable zone which repeats the bearer’s personal information and passport details in a special format.
