Saltwater and Freshwater Fishing

The management of saltwater species falls under the jurisdiction of the Department of Fisheries and Oceans. For those species, a person may, without being registered or licensed and with a vessel that is not registered, engage in recreational fishing

(a) for groundfish with a hand-line or by angling (except for Newfoundland, Labrador and the Lower North Shore of Quebec where a license is required);
(b) for mackerel with a hand-line or by angling;
(c) for capelin with any fishing gear other than trap nets, seines or mobile gear; or
(d) for squid with any fishing gear other than trap nets or mobile gear.

In Quebec , the management of the following species has been delegated to the Provincial Government:  

•  freshwater species (for instance : Lake trout, Pike)

• anadromous species : species that reproduce in fresh water and grow mainly in salt water (for instance : Salmon,  Sea lamprey , Atlantic sturgeon, Striped bass)

• catadromous species : species that reproduce in salt water and grow mainly in fresh water (for instance : Eel)
