AQUACULTURE COORDINATION OFFICE
The Aquaculture Coordination Branch, later to become the Aquaculture
Coordination Office (ACO), was established in 1992 to provide a regional
focus for the DFO Scotia-Fundy programs and activities in aquaculture development.
It has since expanded to include aquaculture activities in the consolidated
DFO Maritimes Region, which includes New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Prince
Edward Island. The primary mission is to develop comprehensive and integrated
policies on aquaculture and to co-ordinate departmental responses to issues
relevant to aquaculture development (regulatory, health and safety, science,
technology transfer, industry development, environmental interactions and
coastal planning). Improved coordination and consultation with all stakeholders
including; federal and provincial agencies, research organizations, fisheries
and aquaculture associations and fish farmers is the primary objective
of the ACO.
