ACTIVITIES OVERVIEW

GENERAL INQUIRIES:

  • Respond to requests on aquaculture in Maritimes Region
  • Maintain overview of aquaculture development in the Maritimes

FEDERAL PROVINCIAL LIAISON:

  • Work with other federal/provincial agencies with responsibilities for aquaculture
  • Within Federal Aquaculture Development Strategy, provide secretariat support to Aquaculture Implementation Committees (NB, NS, PEI)
  • Co-chair and/or participate in Federal/Provincial Committees established under MOU Agreements on Aquaculture Development in NB, NS, PEI
  • Coordinate review of aquaculture site applications and provide advice to leasing/licensing authorities

REGULATIONS AND POLICY DEVELOPMENT:

  • Develop regional policies to provide a positive framework for aquaculture development in the Maritimes Region.
  • Coordinate and make recommendations on introductions or transfers of fish to be used in aquaculture.
  • Coordinate requests by aquaculturists for broodstock/seedstock

AQUACULTURE INDUSTRY LIAISON:

  • Facilitate technology transfer between researchers and industry
  • Review and recommend proposals for aquaculture development to funding authorities
  • Participate in management of federal/provincial funding programs
  • Maintain active liaison with aquaculture industry on development projects

COASTAL PLANNING FOR AQUACULTURE:

  • Coordinate environmental studies in aquaculture development areas (e.g. Annapolis Basin, N.S.)
  • Review shellfish lease use and water classification status
  • Maintain aquaculture resource inventory
