Photo: Boucherville Islands. Environment Canada   Phragmites Invasion of the Boucherville Islands
Common Reed occupied less than one hectare of the Grandes battures Tailhandier in the Boucherville islands, east of Montreal, in 1980. By 2002, close to 33 ha of land was colonized by this tall perennial grass, a species so invasive it threatens biodiversity. Specialists think the lower water levels in the St. Lawrence River have fostered the Phragmites invasion of the Boucherville islands. (2006/03/21)
