The New Horizons for Seniors Program (NHSP) supports the Government of Canada in its commitment to strengthen our country's social foundations and promote the well-being of individuals, families and communities.

The program provides grants of up to $25,000 to support a wide range of community-based projects across Canada that encourage seniors' active living, social participation and helps them to contribute to their communities.

Program objectives are:

  • to harness seniors' skills, experience and knowledge through volunteerism, mentorship and civic leadership; and
  • to create opportunities for seniors to actively participate in their communities and to develop new life skills so that the risk of isolation in later years is reduced.

Who can apply?

Community-based organizations working together with seniors and other partners will inspire and run most New Horizons for Seniors projects.

To be funded, projects must demonstrate community support and partnership.

The program empowers seniors to lead activities and projects that will benefit other seniors, vulnerable groups and the community where they live.

Funding is provided for projects that:

  • establish or strengthen networks and associations that keep seniors active in their communities
  • reach out to vulnerable seniors
  • provide mentorship, leadership training and skill matching
  • promote learning and relationship building across generations
  • develop tools and resource materials and share best practices

How are priorities set?

Priorities are based on the unique needs of seniors in the various regions across Canada. They are set in each province and territory by governments and groups active in seniors' issues.

Priorities are available from Social Development Canada. Contact us or visit our website. To be considered for funding, your proposal must meet the priorities set out for your area.

What is the approval process?

  • Project proposals are submitted to Social Development Canada. (Details can be obtained by contacting Social Development Canada or by visiting the website).
  • Regional review committees established in each province/territory review the proposals and recommend projects.
  • Social Development Canada approves projects based on review committee recommendations and informs the successful applicant.

When can our organization apply?

Social Development Canada will issue a call for applications once or twice a year. Deadlines will be announced publicly on the Department's website.
