Illegal salmon fishing results in fines

Port au Choix … A resident of Hawkes Bay pled guilty in Port au Choix Provincial Court to three fishery offences.

Brent Perry was convicted of three counts of fishing salmon during a closed time and fined a total of $4,500. In addition to the fines, a 25-foot boat, two motors and the contents of the boat including navigational equipment and fishing gear, were ordered forfeited to the Crown.

Mr. Perry was also ordered to write a letter of apology to Salmon Preservation Association for the Waters of Newfoundland (SPAWN) and the Minister of Fisheries and Oceans, and to perform 60 hours of community service. He was also placed on probation for three years, during which time he is not to hold any fishing or hunting licenses, or to be on coastal waters except on a commercial ferry.

The charges were laid in June 2005 following an investigation by fishery officers and fishery guardians from Port au Choix on patrol in the area. Mr. Perry was observed on three consecutive days fishing for salmon in coastal waters. The local RCMP assisted in the seizure of the boat, the motors, and equipment.
