Fishery officers stop cod poachers in Bonavista and Trinity Bays
Clarenville… Three Bonavista men were convicted in provincial court in Clarenville on February 14, 2006, of fishing cod recreationally during a closed time.
Lewis Marsh was fined $2,000, while Steven Marsh and Kevin Tremblett were each fined $750. All three have been prohibited from being on coastal waters for one year.
On July 18, 2005, fishery officers from the Bonavista and Clarenville offices conducted a stakeout in the community of Elliston, Trinity Bay, after receiving several complaints of ongoing cod poaching activity in the area.
While conducting surveillance at the slipway in Elliston, fishery officers heard a vessel approaching. Behind cover, officers observed a white open boat with three individuals aboard approach and land on the slipway.
An inspection of the vessel found 120 lbs of head on gutted cod with an approximate value of $1,000. A 19ft boat, 30hp motor, jiggers, fish pans, and cod were ordered forfeited to the Crown.
Trinity Bay poachers
In provincial court in St. John’s on February 24, 2006, Cory George and Scott Throne, of New Harbour, Trinity Bay, were found guilty of possession of groundfish during a closed time and each fined $1,000. A third man charged in the incident will appear in court at a later date.
On August 21, 2005, fishery officers from the Bay Roberts Detachment were conducting routine coastal patrols in the vicinity of New Harbour when they spotted a small speed boat with three male persons aboard.
Fishery officers inspected the vessel and found one flounder, one codfish and three handlines. All items were seized and ordered forfeited to the Crown.
