OTTAWA – The Honourable Loyola Hearn, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans, today wrapped up his participation in the 2006 International Boston Seafood Show, a pre-eminent international fish and seafood show. The Minister’s visit focused on Canada’s role as a leader in the production of high-quality, safe, fresh and nutritious fish and seafood.
"The Boston Seafood Show was a great opportunity to meet and build relationships with industry groups and my provincial counterparts," said Minister Hearn. "It was also great to meet with those working in the fishing and aquaculture industries, who play key roles in getting Canadian fish and seafood from the ocean to the table."
Minister Hearn also visited a number of exhibits and spoke at various events including the Newfoundland and Labrador Reception, an Industry Roundtable hosted by Fisheries and Oceans Canada, and the Canadian Reception, hosted by the Canadian Consulate General in Boston.
While business dominated his agenda, the Canadian Reception was a personal highlight for Minister Hearn, in part because he got to meet 2006 Olympic gold medalist Brad Gushue.
"Fellow MP Fabian Manning and I were glued to the TV set in my office when Brad and the boys won the gold," recalled the Minister. "To get to meet him in person and to say how proud I was of him as a fellow Newfoundlander and Labradorian was a real privilege. Their win in Turin meant so much to our province, and our country."
The International Boston Seafood Show began on Sunday and wrapped up today. All major fishing nations were represented by exhibitors, delegations, and visitors. Canada showcased its achievements in the fish and seafood industry at the Canadian Pavilion, and through participation at all events.
