  • On May 2, 2005, computer equipment containing limited financial and personal information of current and former participants of nine different benefit plans was stolen from Prudent Benefits Administration Services Inc. (PBAS) Information included names, addresses, rates of pay, Social Insurance Numbers and dates of birth. Full story.

  • As of April 4, 2005, Social Development Canada (SDC) accepts two additional proof-of-identity documents to obtain a Social Insurance Number (SIN):

  • °     the Certificate of Registration of Birth Abroad

°    Ontario’s Certified True Photostatic Print of a Record of a Statement of Live Birth (long form)

Adding these two extra documents to those accepted currently as proof of identity will simplify the Social Insurance Number (SIN) application process for some citizens. The Government of Canada (GoC) is committed to ensuring the Social Insurance Number program remains strong, secure and protected against misuse.
