Stream to Sea: Helping Students Become Aquatic Stewards
For the past 25 years, teachers around British
Columbia have been incubating salmon in the
classroom and taking children on field trips to local streams. Now
Fisheries and Oceans is bringing the ocean to the classroom too!
Students are cleaning up beaches and getting involved in activities
that teach them about sustainability. The vision of the Stream to Sea
strategy is:
"Students and educators are well-informed on
aquatic ecosystems, motivated by a stewardship ethic and contributing
to the health and sustainability of their community." (Vision)
If you are interested in bringing "Stream to Sea"
to your classroom and community, please contact your local
Education
Coordinator, who will provide support
for integrating Stream to Sea into student learning.
You can also obtain DFO
learning resources from the B.C. Teachers' Federation's (BCTF) Lesson
Aids:
Learning resources such as Salmonids in the
Classroom, Watershed Works and the Salish Sea have received the
"provincial recommended" status from the Ministry of Education in B.C.
These resources have been consistently voted among the top 10 lesson
aids by the BCTF.
The following links provide lesson plans that
show the link between Stream to Sea resources and learning outcomes
for subjects in kindergarten to Grade 12.
