Subterranean Features Investigation at Vimy and Beaumont-Hamel

The First World War's Western Front included extensive systems of underground tunnels, subways and dugouts. Ground over similar war-time excavations has settled or collapsed in a number of places at both Vimy and Beaumont-Hamel during the past 10 years.

A detailed investigation of these hidden battlefield features is required to help ensure the health and safety of employees and visitors in public areas. Such an investigation could also improve our understanding of underground warfare as it was conducted during the First World War. Completing this work in a safe manner, which also respects the cultural integrity of the sites involved, presents many technical challenges. A team of specialists is currently being formed to support the mapping and risk assessment associated with these unique subterranean features.
