What is 128-bit encryption?

128-bit encryption is the highest level of protection possible for your Internet communications and transactions.

Encryption electronically scrambles information to minimize the risk that outside parties can view or alter that information when it is transmitted.

How do I check my browser's version and encryption level?

Microsoft Internet Explorer:

  1. Open the "Help" menu at the top of the browser window and select "About Internet Explorer".
  2. Ensure that your browser is version 4.x or higher and has 128-bit encryption. (Note: If your browser "supports U.S. Security", it has 128-bit encryption.)

Netscape Navigator:

  1. Open the "Help" menu at the top of the browser window and select "About Communicator (or Netscape)".
  2. Ensure that your browser is version 4.x or higher and has 128-bit encryption. (Note: If your browser "supports U.S. Security", it has 128-bit encryption.)

How do I download 128-bit Internet Explorer or Netscape Navigator?

Downloading 128-bit Microsoft Internet Explorer:
(Note: This can take several hours.)

  1. Go to the Microsoft World Wide Web site Web site.
  2. Select the most recent version of Internet Explorer (which automatically comes with 128-bit encyrption), or go to "Recommended Updates" and select the "Internet Explorer High Encryption Pack".
  3. Follow Microsoft's instructions to download and install the software.

Downloading 128-bit Netscape Navigator:
(Note: This can take several hours.)

  1. Go to the Netscape World Wide Web site Web site.
  2. Netscape will offer you an upgrade that automatically comes with 128-bit encryption. Make sure the upgrade is version 4.x or higher, but not version 6.0.
  3. Select the "Download" button to download and install the software. (If you require instuctions to download and install the software, select "Installation Instructions" prior to selecting the "Download" button.)

What is a cookie?

A cookie is a small file that is placed on your computer to link information from one screen to another while you are using a Web site or online service.

The cookie does not collect any personal information about you or take any information from your computer. The cookie is deleted from your computer once you exit the service.

How do I enable cookies?

Microsoft Internet Explorer version 5:

  1. Open the "Tools" menu at the top of the browser window and select "Internet Options".
  2. Go to the "Security" tab and select "Custom Level" near the bottom of the window.
  3. Scroll down to the "Cookies" section and select "Enable" or "Prompt" under "Allow cookies that are stored on your computer".
  4. Select "OK".

  1. Open the "View" menu at the top of the browser window and select "Internet Options".
  2. Go to the "Advanced" tab and select "Prompt Before Accepting Cookies" or "Always Accept Cookies".
  3. Select "OK".

Netscape Navigator:

  1. Open the "Edit" menu at the top of the browser window and select "Preferences".
  2. Under the "Category" list (on the left side of the "Preferences" window), select "Advanced".
  3. In the Cookies section, select one of the round buttons that allow your computer to accept cookies.
  4. Select "OK".
