Electronic Amendments

Starting in January 2005, electronic cancelled and amended information slips can be filed through Web forms and XML T4 Internet File transfer options as well as in electronic (XML) format on Magnetic media.

An amended return can contain amended or cancelled slips, but cannot contain original slips.

The instructions below are specific to File Transfer (XML). If you are using the Web forms option, this will be done for you.

• Original slips
  These are slips that have not been included with an already filed original return. If you have original slips that were not filed with your return, file them in a separate original return. Original slips are indicated in your XML file with report type code "O".
  
  
• Amended slips
  These are slips that include changes to slips already filed. Amended slips are indicated in an XML file with report type code "A".
  
  
• Cancelled slips
  These are slips that were filed but must be removed. Cancelled slips are indicated in an XML file with report type code "C".
  
  
• Cancelling a return
  To cancel a return that you have filed, write to your tax services office.

Cancelling and amending slips

To use this fast and convenient way of cancelling and amending slips, you must make sure that all of the following conditions are met:

• The electronic file must include amended and cancelled slips only -- no original slips.
• The summary and transmittal record must indicate the slips are amended -- not original.
• The file format must be in the new Extensible Markup Language (XML) as specified in the Magnetic Media specifications.
• The file name must have the extension specified in the Magnetic Media specifications.
• The filer number (i.e. Business Number; Filer Identification Number) must be valid.
• The file must be saved on hard medium (diskette or CD-ROM) and sent to:
  
  Canada Revenue Agency
  Magnetic Media Processing Unit
  Ottawa Technology Centre
  875 Heron Road
  Ottawa ON K1A 1A2
