PROVINCIAL BREAKDOWN OF CANADIAN FISH AND SEAFOOD EXPORTS IN 2005

March 2006



Canada’s fishing and aquaculture industries continued to perform well in 2005, with exports of fish and seafood products totalling $4.3 billion.

The six largest Canadian exporting provinces of fish and seafood in 2005 were Nova Scotia, British Columbia, Newfoundland and Labrador, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, and Quebec.

NOVA SCOTIA:

  • Canada’s top exporter of fish and seafood products again in 2005 with a value of $1.03 billion.
  • Exported 144,266 tonnes (t) of fish and seafood in 2005.
  • The three most important species in terms of value were lobster (21,473 t valued at $392.4 million), crab (12,784 t valued at $117.5 million), and shrimp (31,114 t valued at $112.8 million).
  • Nova Scotia’s highest valued export species group was shellfish, valued at $750.5 million.

BRITISH COLUMBIA:

  • Canada’s second leading exporter of fish and seafood products in 2005 with a value of $995 million.
  • Exported 199,392 t of fish and seafood in 2005.
  • B.C.’s most valuable species were farmed Atlantic salmon (45,612 t valued at $261.9 million), wild salmon (37,786 t valued at $184.4 million), and herring (10,219 t valued at $94.4 million.

NEWFOUNDLAND AND LABRADOR:

  • Canada’s third leading exporter of fish and seafood products with exports valued at $886.6 million.
  • Exported 190,402 t of fish and seafood in 2005.
  • Exports decreased 12% in value from 2004, crab exports were down 38% in value.
  • Its top three species were shrimp (55,805 t valued at $278.5 million), crab (30,441 t valued at $275.7 million), and mackerel (25,228 t valued at $53.2 million).
  • Newfoundland and Labrador’s highest valued export species group was shellfish, valued at $597.1 million.

NEW BRUNSWICK:

  • The fourth leading exporter of fish and seafood products in Canada with a value of $832.3 million.
  • Exported 99,556 t of fish and seafood in 2005.
  • Its top three species were lobster (14,595 t valued at $401.8 million), salmon (25,169 t valued at $175.7 million), and crab (12,684 t valued at $124.4 million).
  • New Brunswick’s highest valued export species group was shellfish, valued at $565.4 million.

PRINCE EDWARD ISLAND:

  • Ranked fifth among Canadian provinces in fish and seafood exports with a value of $208.8 million.
  • Exported 19,169 t of fish and seafood in 2005.
  • Its top three species were lobster (5,463 t valued at $153.7 million), mussels (8,475 t valued at $24.3 million), and crab (1,191 t valued at $10.6 million).
  • Shellfish accounted for $197.3 million of P.E.I.’s exports, 94% of its overall total.

QUEBEC:

  • Was the sixth leading exporter of fish and seafood products in Canada with exports valued at $201 million.
  • Exported 26,282 t of fish and seafood in 2005.
  • Its top three species were crab (8,940 t valued at $76.9 million), lobster (943 t valued at $29.4 million) and shrimp (2,441 t valued at $20.8 million).
  • Quebec’s highest valued export species group was shellfish, valued at $132.2 million.
