The VAC Health Care Identification Card

VAC's Health Care Identification Card allows you to more efficiently serve eligible VAC clients. It contains various kinds of client information with which you should be familiar. Click on the Health Care Identification Card to find out more.

Name: This is the client's name. This is the only person who is eligible to use health care benefits obtained with this card. The client's spouse/common-law partner or dependents are not covered.

Client Number: This is the client's identification number. It begins with the letter "K". Please quote this number whenever you request information about the client.

Program: The numbers 1 through 14 represent Programs of Choice (POC) available through VAC. Information specific to each POC may be obtained by reviewing the Benefit Grid .

Group: Two groups of clients are eligible to receive health care benefits or services through VAC:
  1. Group "A" clients who have the letter "A" shown under a Program of Choice are eligible to receive health care benefits that are directly related to their pensioned disability. Some benefits may require pre-authorization by the Department.
  2. Group "B"clients who have the letter "B" shown under a Program of Choice are eligible to receive benefits providing they have a clearly demonstrated health need and the benefits are not covered by a provincial health care plan. Some benefits may require pre-authorization by the Department.
Client Info: This toll-free telephone number is reserved for clients who wish to obtain more information regarding VAC's health care programs. Provider inquiries should be directed to your regional Blue Cross office or to your regional VAC Supplier Inquiry Unit.

As a participating provider, you are required to accept VAC Health Care Identification Cards for eligible clients in lieu of cash payment for eligible benefits. When dispensing benefits or services to VAC clients, please note that:

  • The VAC Health Care Identification Card must be presented each time a client receives benefits;
  • The card is valid only if it has been signed on the back by the client.
If the card is not available, you can call the VAC Supplier Inquiry Unit to confirm a client's eligibility.
