Tips for applying online

The CRA has been accepting job applications online since November 1, 1999. We've learned a few things since then and want to share some tips and reminders with people using our online system to apply for job openings.

  1. System unavailable
  2. Print a copy of your application
  3. Confirmation number
  4. Mandatory fields
  5. Maximum number of characters
  6. Other ways to apply
  7. No computer access
  8. Contact in case of problems

1. The online application system is unavailable from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. on Thursdays for regular system maintenance.

2. We recommend that you print a copy of your application form for your own records.

3. If your online application was successfully transmitted, you'll immediately receive an acknowledgment page with your individual confirmation number. If you don't receive a confirmation number, there has been a problem with your submission.

A pop-up box will appear with an error message.

Please make note of your errors, then if you wish, minimize or close your pop-up box and return to your online application in order to correct your errors.

4. You must type in at least some text in mandatory fields. Otherwise, the system won't accept your application, and you'll receive an error message.

If a mandatory field doesn't apply to you, type in the word "none".

5. Certain fields can accept only a maximum number of characters, so please be as concise as possible.

For instance, the experience field holds a maximum of 1,500 characters (about 150 words). If you type in more than 1,500 characters, the system won't accept your application and you'll receive an error message.

You shouldn't normally have to go over the established limits because we've set up the online form to accept the amount of detail we consider appropriate.

6. Individual job notices may include a section about other ways to apply for people who can't apply online.

Unless an individual job notice specifically allows it, do not email or drop off a copy of your résumé instead of sending an online application: your résumé will not be accepted.

7. If you don't have access to a computer, check the job notice to see what other application methods -- such as fax, mail or hand delivery -- are allowed.

8. If you have any problems applying for job openings, please visit our FAQs page: the answer you need may already be waiting for you!

Otherwise, please contact us. Or you can call us toll-free on weekdays from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. EST at 1-800-571-7150.
