PAGTAKHAN - WOMEN FACING WAR PROJECT LAUNCH
January 10, 2002 No. 5
Dr. Rey Pagtakhan, Secretary of State (Asia-Pacific), will offer opening remarks at the Canadian launch of the Women
Facing War project, a global study by the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) on Monday, January 14, in
Ottawa. Media representatives are invited to attend.
Women Facing War is the first project of its kind and marks the culmination of more than two years of field research
involving women in situations of armed conflict. It was initiated in 1998 with the aim of heightening awareness about the
many issues faced by women in wartime, such as personal safety, sexual violence, displacement, access to health care, food
and shelter, and detention. Also examined are the varied, sometimes unfamiliar roles women assume during times of
conflict, which may include becoming combatants or civilian targets.
To date, Women Facing War has been released in Switzerland, Australia, South Africa and the United Kingdom.
