MANLEY- VISIT TO INDIA AND PAKISTAN

Media representatives are advised that John Manley, Minister of Foreign Affairs will visit Pakistan and India from January 18 to 27, 2002. Minister Manley will participate in bilateral dialogue with counterparts in India and Pakistan and will underscore Canada's encouragement of regional co-operation in the lead up to the June 2002 G8 Summit, over which Canada will preside.

En route to Pakistan, Minister Manley will make a stop in Manama, Bahrain where he will participate in the Terry Fox Run.

Minister Manley will visit Islamabad, Pakistan on January 18 and 19 where he will meet with Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf and Pakistani Foreign Minister Abdul Sattar. In addition, the Minister will visit Fatima Jinnah Women's University in Rawalpindi and will hold meetings with members of the Canadian business community in Pakistan.

While in India from January 20 through 27, Mr Manley will meet with President K.R. Narayanan, Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Minister of External Affairs Jaswant Singh. Additional meetings will be held with Minister of Home Affairs Lal Krishna Advani and Opposition Leader Sonia Gandhi. Meetings and a round table are also scheduled with leading members of the Indian business community in Mumbai and Chennai.

Minister Manley will deliver two keynote speeches in India. The first of these will be given at a function in New Delhi co-hosted by Jawaharlal Nehru University and the Shastri Indo-Canadian Institute. The second address will be delivered in Mumbai at a luncheon hosted by members of the Indo-Canadian Business Council (I-CBC) and Indian Merchants Chamber (IMC).

Additional highlights of the India leg of the trip will include visits to the cities of Amritsar and Agra and a stop in Goa. In Amritsar, Mr. Manley will become the first Canadian foreign minister ever to visit the Golden Temple. In Agra, Minister Manley will visit the Taj Mahal and the Red Fort.
