PARADIS - TO SPEAK IN MONTREAL (AUF)
April 23, 2002 No. 58
Media representatives are advised that Denis Paradis, Secretary of State (Latin America and Africa) (Francophonie), will be
at the University of Montreal this evening to deliver a speech, on behalf of Prime Minister Jean Chrétien, at a dinner
commemorating the fortieth anniversary of the founding of the Agence universitaire de la Francophonie (AUF).
The main areas of involvement of the AUF, which encompasses most of the university establishments in La Francophonie,
are research, higher education and training, including distance training and the promotion of French.
At the Quebec Summit in 1987, the AUF was made the operating agency for university cooperation. This role was included
in the Charter of La Francophonie adopted in Hanoi in October 1997. The headquarters of the AUF is in Montreal.
