EGGLETON ANNOUNCES CREATION OF
GLOBAL OPPORTUNITIES RESPONSE TEAM (GO-TEAM)
The Honourable Art Eggleton, Minister for International Trade, is pleased to
announce today the creation of the Global Opportunities Response Team (GO-Team),
comprising trade commissioners to be posted for short assignments in priority
markets. They will provide Canadian exporters with assistance to quickly assess
and respond to emerging business opportunities in these overseas markets.
"Exports and foreign investment create jobs in Canada, making International
Business Development a key component of the Government's economic agenda," said
Mr. Eggleton. "I am committed to ensuring that the necessary means are available
to allow Canadian firms to take full advantage of the fast-emerging trade
opportunities in foreign markets. The GO-Team has been created to serve this
important function."
Five additional trade commissioners have been assigned for a period of six months
in each of the following countries:
Israel and Chile -- to follow up on the recently concluded free trade agreements;
and
the Philippines, Thailand and Korea -- to maximize the benefits of the numerous
opportunities generated by the recent Team Canada Mission to these countries.
A member of the GO-Team will also be assigned shortly to Brazil to assist with the
preparation of a number of important trade initiatives.
"The Trade Commissioner Service (TCS) -- trade officers and counsellors working at
embassies abroad and at the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade
-- has brought international business opportunities to the Canadian business
community for more than 100 years," said Mr. Eggleton. "The role of the TCS is
more vital than ever in a world of global markets and freer trade. In that
regard, the Go-Team will offer enhanced services to Canadian companies."
