ATLANTIC CANADA CELEBRATES CANADA'S YEAR OF ASIA PACIFIC

June 20, 1997 No. 107

ATLANTIC CANADA CELEBRATES

CANADA'S YEAR OF ASIA PACIFIC

The Honourable Lloyd Axworthy, Minister of Foreign Affairs, today announced that a series of events in Atlantic Canada will receive funding as part of the cultural component of Canada's Year of Asia Pacific (CYAP).

Upcoming events were highlighted at a gathering of artists, performers and event organizers from Nova Scotia's cultural community, at the Anna Leonowens Gallery of the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design.

"Canada's Year of Asia Pacific will help strengthen and expand our relationship with the Asia Pacific region by promoting increased business opportunities, youth involvement and cultural exchanges," said Mr. Axworthy. "The CYAP cultural program celebrates Canada's cultural ties to the region, and recognizes the contribution of Canada's cultural sector to strengthening our relations in Asia Pacific."

About $207 000 is being provided in support of 48 different projects in Atlantic Canada, ranging from cultural events and visual arts exhibits to performances and workshops.

"I am very pleased to announce these projects as part of the activities scheduled for Canada's Year of Asia Pacific," said Mr. Axworthy. "These events will provide an excellent opportunity to strengthen our people-to-people connection with other Asia Pacific communities through heightened cross-cultural awareness. It is another example of the federal government's efforts to facilitate new cultural and business ties with this dynamic region."

The Government of Canada has designated 1997 as Canada's Year of Asia Pacific in honour of its role as this year's chair of the Asia Pacific Economic Co-operation (APEC) forum. Activities planned across the country throughout the year include business and trade seminars at the local and national level; cultural and youth events; and a series of APEC ministerial meetings. CYAP will culminate in the APEC Economic Leaders' Meeting in November, when the Prime Minister will host economic leaders from Asia Pacific in Vancouver.

Funding for CYAP cultural projects has been provided for in the federal budget, and is therefore built into the existing fiscal framework.
