STATEMENT BY THE MINISTER OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS

August 31, 1997 No. 137

STATEMENT BY THE MINISTER OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS

Foreign Affairs Minister Lloyd Axworthy issued the followed statement on hearing of the tragic death of Diana, Princess of Wales:

"On behalf of the people of Canada, I join the Governor-General and the Prime Minister of Canada in expressing my deepest condolences to the family and friends of Diana, Princess of Wales, most especially her two sons.

"Diana occupied a warm place in our hearts for the radiance of her personality and for her many humanitarian works. She had great empathy for the afflicted, and played a leading role in bringing the issue of land mines into the public consciousness. She will be sorely missed."
