CHAN TO PROMOTE NICHE MARKETS IN CHINA,
HONG KONG AND JAPAN
Secretary of State (Asia-Pacific) Raymond Chan will travel to China, Hong Kong and
Japan to promote new business opportunities for Canadian firms and enhanced
bilateral trade, from October 10 to 17.
"This visit is targeted at matching Canadian firms to niche markets where
meaningful export opportunities exist," said Mr. Chan. "The federal government is
doing its part to give leading Canadian companies the contacts, visibility and
access to capital they need to have an impact in these lucrative Asian markets."
While in China from October 11 to 13, Mr. Chan and Canadian business leaders will
attend the 1997 Liaoning International Trade Fair in Dalian, located in China's
northeastern region. Mr. Chan will promote Canada's trade and economic interests
in Dalian, a city currently pursuing an aggressive campaign to become the Hong
Kong of northeast China.
In Hong Kong, Mr. Chan will meet with the Chief Secretary of the Administration of
the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, Mrs. Anson Chan, other government
leaders and representatives from various Hong Kong firms.
Mr. Chan will then travel to Kobe, Japan on October 15 to support a Canadian
delegation attending the annual two-day meeting of the Kansai-Canada West Business
Forum (KCWBF). Mr. Chan will open the Forum and deliver the opening address. The
KCWBF brings together senior business leaders from western Japan and western
Canada to exchange views and foster partnerships between the two regions.
