November 3, 1997 No. 177

VISIT TO CANADA BY DR. KLAUS KINKEL,

MINISTER OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS OF

THE FEDERAL REPUBLIC OF GERMANY

Foreign Affairs Minister Lloyd Axworthy today announced that the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Federal Republic of Germany, Dr. Klaus Kinkel, will visit Canada on November 4.

The agenda for the meeting by the two Ministers provides for discussions on a number of topics of common interest, including progress on banning and eliminating anti-personnel mines, and improving Canadian-German relations.

Dr. Kinkel will preside at the opening ceremonies of the Canadian Centre for German and European Studies, a partnership between the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), the University of Montréal and York University. DAAD will contribute $4 million over 10 years to cover operating costs; that contribution and time frame will be matched by the two universities combined.

"This Centre is a model of co-operation among institutions, and is a major asset for the City of Montréal and for all of Canada," said Mr. Axworthy. "This partnership between the University of Montréal and York University will help to raise Canada's international profile."

The Centre's mandate will be to promote research and teaching to improve knowledge and understanding of German and European cultures in Canada.
