Canada Customs and Revenue Agency launches new way to file GST/HST returns

Ottawa, April 26, 2001... The Honourable Martin Cauchon, Minister of National Revenue and Secretary of State responsible for the Economic Development Agency of Canada for the regions of Quebec, announced today that the Canada Customs and Revenue Agency (CCRA) is now offering Canadian businesses a new way to file their goods and services tax/harmonized sales tax (GST/HST) returns.

GST/HST TELEFILE is an attractive new alternative that allows selected business clients to file their GST/HST returns electronically. Eligible business clients can file their returns in a matter of minutes using their touch-tone telephone and a toll-free number. Through the use of proven technology, GST/HST TELEFILE cuts down processing time, eliminates the need to mail paper returns, and speeds up refunds.

"The CCRA fosters a very innovative approach to client service, and GST/HST TELEFILE is an excellent example of the CCRA's commitment to client service excellence. It also demonstrates the CCRA's responsiveness to the needs of the Canadian business community in offering a more efficient alternative to filing paper-based returns" noted Minister Cauchon.

Eligible business clients who have nil GST/HST returns or who expect refunds of $10,000 or less will be able to use GST/HST TELEFILE to file their returns. The service is available Monday to Friday (except statutory holidays) from 8:30 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. and on Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. local time in all time zones throughout Canada.

GST/HST TELEFILE is a fast and easy-to-use automated telephone process. It guides business clients through the few simple steps of submitting the required tax information. Once the data has been given, clients will be asked to confirm they intend to file the information provided as their return. They will immediately get a confirmation number for their records, and their return will start being processed at once.
