Employers can now use TeleReply to report nil payroll deductions information by phone

Ottawa, July 3, 2001... Employers can now use TeleReply-the Canada Customs and Revenue Agency's (CCRA's) new toll-free telephone service-to report payroll information when their remittance amount is nil. TeleReply is especially convenient for small employers and employers of seasonal workers who have no employees during certain periods of the year.

TeleReply is a welcome alternative to the current paper-driven reporting process. It offers the CCRA's business clients a quick and secure electronic reporting method and makes it easier for them to meet their payroll requirements. This service improvement complements other reporting options available to them, such as reporting on paper by mail, via financial institutions and payroll service providers, or in person at CCRA offices.

TeleReply is available Monday to Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. and on Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. local time, in all provinces and territories. Employers may simply use a touch-tone telephone to call TeleReply toll free at 1-800-959-2256. An automated reply service will guide them through a few easy steps for reporting nil remittance payroll information, and will provide them with a confirmation number immediately. The employer's payroll deductions account will be updated by the next business day.

The CCRA will review nil remittance information received through TeleReply in the same way as nil remittance vouchers received by mail. Employers should keep their working copy of the remittance voucher, along with any information they used to complete the voucher. The CCRA may ask to examine these documents at a later date.

Employers doing business in Nova Scotia can also use TeleReply to report nil remittances to the Workers' Compensation Board of Nova Scotia.

Business clients can get more information on TeleReply by calling 1-800-959-2256 or by visiting: www.ccra.gc.ca/telereply.
