Programs that Promote Environmental Sustainability:

Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (AAFC), in partnership with others in the sector and government, promotes the wise stewardship of agricultural resources through its many programs under the Canadian Adaptation and Rural Development (CARD) fund.

Further information about the CARD programs that promote environmental sustainability may be obtained by clicking on their links. The following links possess short descriptions of the programs, contact information and ways to become involved.

Some environmental initiatives recently completed under the CARD fund include the:

  • Hog Environmental Management Strategy (HEMS) (1998-1999)
  • National Soil and Water Conservation Program (NSWCP) (1997-1999)

The CARD fund was established in 1995 to build the agriculture and agri-food sector's capacity to adapt and grow in the face of challenges posed by a rapidly changing world economy. With the reestablishment of CARD as a continuous program in March 1999, Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada renewed its mandate to help the industry build a productive, competitive, and market-oriented sector. Over the four year period of 1999 - 2003, CARD will focus on six adaptation policy priorities: research and innovation; human resources, environmental sustainability, food safety and quality; marketing and rural development. Funding for the renewed CARD is $60 million per year over the next four years (1999-2003), for a total of $240 million.
