Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada reaching out to the diverse cultural communities of Canada

Canada is a nation that is flourishing in the twenty-first century. Our country is enjoying a booming economy, promoting a safe and secure environment, and hosting a growing population that is richly diverse and that is continuing to evolve. The Government of Canada recognizes the value of our diversity and is striving to be representative of the population it serves and to deliver services in a manner that is culturally sensitive.

As part of its efforts to support inclusiveness,AAFC is undertaking a diversity project in partnership with the Department of Canadian Heritage. The goal is to "Make AAFC a Centre of Excellence by promoting diversity, respect and connections between employees and clients."

Agricultural Policy Framework

The Government of Canada and provincial and territorial governments are working with the agriculture and agri-food industry and interested Canadians to implement agricultural policy for the 21st century. The objective is for Canada to be the world leader in food safety, innovation and environmentally-responsible production. Governments have been holding consultations with stakeholders and interested Canadians, to develop and implement the proposed policy approach.

Agri-Food Trade Policy

The Agri-Food Trade Policy Web site is designed to inform interested Canadians about international agricultural trade policy. The site includes information on current Canadian trade agreements, Canada's participation in on-going agricultural trade negotiations and domestic consultations that are underway with agriculture stakeholders.

Canadian Rural Partnership - Rural Dialogue

The Rural Dialogue, a key component of the Canadian Rural Partnership, is designed to respond to rural development issues and concerns. The Rural Dialogue engages Canadians from rural, remote, and northern regions in a two-way discussion with the federal government on opportunities, challenges and priorities, as well as on the role that governments, communities, stakeholder groups and individuals play in enhancing the quality of life in rural, remote, and northern Canada.

Industry Consultations on a Proposed National Inspection Regime for Organic Agriculture

Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (AAFC) and the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) have been working with the organic industry to assess the need and develop options for a mandatory organic regulation. The CFIA is evaluating options where it would oversee a regime which ensures a consistent compliance plan for the production, export, import, handling, and management practices for organic products.

Panel to review the electoral system for Directors of the Canadian Wheat Board

The Government of Canada is committed to strengthen the changes we introduced in 1998, reinforcing farmer control of the Canadian Wheat Board. Improving the election procedures and voting lists, will both ensure that producer's interests are recognized and will enhance the validation of the elected farmers to the Board.
