Federal Student Work Experience Program (FSWEP)

I focus exclusively on Internet issues such as creating Best Practices on preparing and prosecuting cybercrime cases. That's exciting! Susheel Gupta, Ottawa, Ontario

The Federal Student Work Experience Program (FSWEP) is the primary vehicle through which federal departments and agencies recruit students for temporary students jobs. FSWEP gives full-time post-secondary students fair and equal access to students jobs offered by the Public Service of Canada and opportunities to learn about the federal government and gain valuable experience while developing and improving their employability skills. The Department of Justice participates in this Program by hiring many summer students in various fields of studies, including a large number of law students.

Eligibility

Except as noted below, law students in their first, second, or third year may apply for employment with the Department of Justice through the federal government's Federal Student Work Experience Program.

Positions available

In the National Capital Region (Ottawa-Gatineau), as well as Justice regional offices located in Edmonton, Calgary (Sub-Office), Montreal, Toronto, Saskatoon, Vancouver, Whitehorse, Winnipeg and Yellowknife (Iqaluit and Inuvik Sub-Offices).

Please note that in the case of the Ontario Regional Office (Toronto) and the British Columbia Regional Office only, they hire their summer law students directly. For 2005, the Ontario Regional Office (Toronto), will hire 8 second year summer law students and the British Columbia Regional Office will hire second year summer law students only. Law students should send their resumés, cover letters and transcripts to:

For all other regions, students must be registered with the Federal Student Work Experience Program (FSWEP) at the Public Service Commission. You can apply on-line or obtain an application kit at career offices on campus, Canada Employment Centres and Public Service Commission offices.

For all fields of study, except law, there is no deadline for registering with the Federal Student Work Experience Program (FSWEP) at the PSC. Managers have access to that particular inventory all the time.

Selection

Department of Justice managers review applications from law students. Qualified candidates are then contacted to determine their interest in a position and their availability for interviews. Students are assessed either by telephone or in person.

Rates of pay

Pay rates for students in the program are established by the Treasury Board and are based on the number of years of post-secondary education successfully completed.

Deadline for submitting applications

  • For Vancouver and Toronto, please see above for their respective deadlines or contact their office directly.
  • Aboriginal persons, members of visible minorities and persons with disabilities are encouraged to apply.
  • Apply on-line or get more information via the Public Service Commission Web Site at http://jobs.gc.ca.
