 BIO Ocean's  Association

The Bedford Institute of Oceanography Oceans Association was formed by group of retired public servants previously involved in Ocean Science and Hydrography who share an abiding interest in the Bedford Institute. In addition to social activities, the Association is concerned with the history of BIO and in enhancing public knowledge about the oceans. Membership is open to anyone who shares our goals.

Membership in the Association includes former staff from the full range of scientific, engineering, technical and administrative groups. Over many years we have formed a common bond through an interest in oceanography. An unusual feature of the Institute has always been a very slow turnover rate of staff compared to many government agencies.

We found that we could forge rewarding careers without leaving BIO – and many of our members spent much of their time as public servants on the BIO campus. This resulted in a sense of fellowship that we do not wish to lose after our formal association with the Institute has ceased. The retirees association preserves this connection.

Institute management have encouraged our group and supported our interest in BIO history by providing archival support through the Institute library. We have begun to collect documents and artifacts from the early days of BIO through to the present time. This collection can provide insight into the nature of the scientific and administrative challenges that have been overcome in the past and will help guide future action in a more complete context.

Some of members have continued as scientific volunteers doing studies and research which contributes to Canadian oceanography. Their work helps ensure that the knowledge built up over many years can be passed to the next generation of BIO oceanographers as the process of staff renewal replaces the old timers. We also have an interest in education and are available as volunteer tutors, lecturers and tour guides as the need arises. Our social activities include annual events such as a summer picnic, winter social evening, travel club and bridge club. A travel group is about to depart for a fresh water cruise on an English canal – not quite the same as an expedition on Hudson, but certainly in the right context. Consider joining. Membership is not restricted.
