Anémie
Qu'est ce que l'anémie?
L'anémie est une maladie du sang caractérisée par des niveaux anormalement bas de globules rouges dans le corps. Elle est habituellement le symptôme d'une affection sous-jacente.
Les globules rouges contiennent de l'hémoglobine, une protéine nécessaire au transport de l'oxygène des poumons au reste du corps. Lorsque le nombre de globules rouges, et donc la quantité d'hémoglobine, est faible, le volume d'oxygène transporté aux organes et aux tissus est également faible. Sans oxygène, les tissus ne peuvent produire l'énergie nécessaire pour fonctionner normalement. Pour que le corps soit en bonne santé, les organes et les tissus ont besoin d'un approvisionnement régulier en oxygène. Un approvisionnement insuffisant peut entraîner des symptômes tels que la fatigue, la pâleur, l'essoufflement, un manque de vitalité, des étourdissements et parfois la mort.
Il existe plusieurs types d'anémie, causés par différents problèmes sous-jacents :
Historique de l'anémie
L'anémie est un signe d'une affection sous-jacente. En soi, ce n'est pas une maladie. Plusieurs maladies, y compris certains troubles génétiques, peuvent par moments être associés à l'anémie.
La recherche sur l'anémie drépanocytaire a fourni d'importantes découvertes qui valent la peine d'être mentionnées. Après avoir observé que l'hémoglobine des patients souffrant d'anémie drépanocytaire était différente de celle des individus normaux, les chercheurs ont découvert pour la première fois qu´une protéine anormale pouvait être la cause principale d´une maladie. En 1956, on a séquencé l'hémoglobine des cellules drépanocytaires et situé le point exact de la mutation du gène responsable de la maladie. Ainsi, l'anémie drépanocytaire est devenue le premier trouble génétique auquel on a pu associer un fondement moléculaire.
Il existe plusieurs causes génétiques de l'anémie. Certaines sont provoquées par des mutations des molécules d'hémoglobine ou des globules rouges. Voici quelques types d'anémie provoqués par des causes génétiques :
On envisage actuellement d´utiliser la thérapie génique pour traiter ces trois formes d'anémie héréditaire. Cependant, cette solution en est seulement aux premières étapes d´élaboration.
Le diagnostic de l'anémie nécessite une simple analyse du sang pour déterminer le nombre de globules rouges et la quantité d'hémoglobine dans le sang. Lorsqu´on sait qu'une personne est anémique, on peut lui faire subir toute une gamme de tests pour déterminer la cause. Les procédés biotechnologiques suivants permettent le criblage et le diagnostic de l'anémie causée par des facteurs génétiques :

Les traitements de l'anémie visent les causes spécifiques de cette affection. Certains types d'anémie provoqués par des mutations génétiques ne peuvent être guéris. Les traitements disponibles sont donc axés sur la réduction des symptômes dans le but de contrôler efficacement le trouble. La biotechnologie a beaucoup contribué à l´élaboration de certains de ces traitements.
La recherche de traitements pour l'anémie est principalement axée sur deux secteurs : la stimulation de la production de globules rouges par la protéine responsable de leur production et la stimulation de la moelle osseuse pour la forcer à augmenter sa production de globules rouges.
