The Department of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness Canada is a strong supporter of the voluntary sector. In cooperation with the National Parole Board, Correctional Service of Canada and the RCMP, the Department works with numerous voluntary organizations active in the areas of corrections, criminal justice and public safety on matters of government decision-making, policy-development and program delivery.

In its relationship with the voluntary sector, the Department supports and encourages cooperation through consultation, information sharing, exchange of expertise and knowledge, provision of resources and the development of accountability measures.

The Department collaborates with the voluntary sector on important issues such as restorative justice, victims' issues, Aboriginal issues, effective corrections and youth justice.

The Department is also a full participant in the Partnering for the Benefit of Canadians: Government of Canada - Voluntary Sector Initiative. As the third pillar of Canadian society, the voluntary sector helps the Department fulfill its mandate to protect Canadians and maintain a peaceful and safe society.
