Integrated Justice Information
Public Safety Interoperability Directorate (PSID) formerly, Integrated Justice Information Secretariat (IJIS)

The Integrated Justice Information initiative continues to take on a new relevance as the issue of Public Safety and National Security is at the top of the Government of Canada’s agenda in these uncertain times. Now more than ever, the international threat environment is more fluid requiring a need for improved co-ordination of vital information between core departments. As a result, RTID (Real Time Identification) and the Interoperability Project have received greater focus and funding to provide effective tools to those who are responsible to keep our communities safe and secure our borders. These tools will allow the best information to be shared across public safety and security agencies enhancing the safety and security of all Canadian citizens.

What's New in Integrated Justice Information

Real Time Identification (RTID)

In the 2004 speech from the throne, the government of Canada committed to modernize the RCMP fingerprints and criminal record system. Real Time Identification (RTID), when integrated with the Canadian Police Information Centre (CPIC) and the Police Reporting and Occurrence System (PROS), and using deployed LiveScan equipment, will streamline the process of all types of fingerprints based identification requests. This initiative forms part of the RCMP’s National Security Enhancements.

Interoperability Project

In 1999, the Integrated Justice Information program was established to improve the operational information available to criminal justice and law enforcement officials.

On March 23, 2004, the Government of Canada announced a further investment of $605M over five years for priorities such as intelligence, border protection, marine and cyber security, and enhanced coordination of systems, information, threat assessments and emergency response.

Cabinet also approved an 18-month project to develop a vision and strategic design to address outstanding issues related to interoperability. This comprehensive Public Safety and Security Information Sharing and Interoperability project (launched in April of 2004) will provide the Government of Canada with a framework and strategy to better integrate information systems amongst all organizations having a significant role in delivering public safety and security.

For additional information on Information Sharing and Interoperability, see the speech by Margaret Bloodworth, April 26th 2004 at the Public Safety Transformation Conference.
